Upfronts Post-mortem
Before we get into what may be your new favorite TV shows next season, I'd like to take a few moments to discuss a couple of season finales that aired this week. Gossip Girl and Smash ... WHAT THE FUCK? The level of destruction and fucking fucked-ness these two shows brought into my home on Monday night was enough to almost toss my television out the window. Gossip Girl destroyed Dan and Blair, a relationship that was a union of equal, a healthy, supportive, mature relationship so that Blair could go crawling back to Chuck and get pissed all over by Chuck... AGAIN. Jesus Fucking Christ. I have never been more raged at a TV show .. ever. Oh, but then 10pm rolled around and Smash turned into an hour of "Katharine McPhee is the greatest singer/actress ever to happen to our network". I feel personally victimized by Smash for putting my favorite character, Ivy, through what was tantamount to an hour of kicking her in the face and then lighting her corpse on fire. I actually might have to write a long post about Smash because the rage feelings haven't subsided and it's been four days and I feel like I need to vent in journal form so that I don't blow out a retina from all the building blood pressure.

*Breath*

Upfronts are now done and I can safely say no pilot I was super interested in was picked up. Alas, no Bridget Regan in the Old West for us this season (THAT PILOT BETTER LEAK OR I WILL HIT SOMEONE IN THE FACE). Alas, no American version of the Bad Girls, no remake of 80's dirty soapness in Scruples and ... well ... basically nothing that interest me. I don't think I've been this meh about a pilot season ever.

For a list of complete pilot pick-ups and new schedules:
NBC | Fox | ABC | CBS | The CW

And now for a few notes...

— Let's get the fucking bullshit out of the way first... FUCK YOU, NBC. NBC, in its infinity wisdom, decided to renew most of its comedy block but give them a half season order, no more than 13 episodes and then ordered a crap-load of new comedies that all look horrible. 30 Rock is ending its run this season and got a shortened order. Parks & Rec, Up All Night and Community were all brought back, but all got a shortened 13 episode order (scratch Park & Rec... it got a 22 episode order.. I was going off old reports before NBC confirmed). The Office and Whitney (oh, yes WHITNEY) were also renewed, but they both got a full 22 episode order. YES, WHITNEY GOT A FULL SEASON, Y'ALL. Then, because everyone at NBC is a fucking genius, they have paired Whitney with Community and moved them to Friday night where they will die a slow death. NBC can finally wash its hands of Community, giving them just under the 100 episodes that broadcasters like for syndication. When Community is canceled next season, NBC can go "well, we renewed it and gave it a chance when we really didn't have to... it just didn't perform." FUCK YOU NBC! Also, Dan Harmon isn't signed up for next season of Community so the show may every well be back without its main creator force. Urgh.

— One of the pleasant surprises of this Upfront season was how many shows got pick-ups that are fronted by a non-white lead actor. It's almost like we are living the 21st Century or something. ABC'S Last Resort is being fronted by the amazing Andre Braugher. NBC's Infamous is headed by D.E.B.S. alum Meagan Good. The CW's Beauty and the Beast reboot has Kristin Kreuk as it's Beauty. Fox has Mindy Kaling as the lead in The Mindy Project. With ABC's Scandal and The CW's Nikita, the networks now have six networks shows with a non-white actor as its lead and that is something to be very happy with. MOTHERFUCKING PROGRESS! Still a ways to go ... yo, networks, were are the Latinos as leads, but it is still something worth nothing.

— The big trend this season was ... SUPERNATURAL AND REBOOTS AND COMEDIES... OH MY! On the comedy front, all the networks are looking to branch out and pack their schedules with new comedy blocks on new nights. Fox is doing a solid 2 hour night of comedy on Tuesday. NBC is opening up a new comedy blocks and Wednesday and Friday. ABC is also looking to reclaim Friday nights, once the home of their successful TGIF comedy block during the 80s/90s. NBC is actually abandoning a drama hour on Thursday nights at 10pm, the slot filled for all of my adult life by their best dramas .. LA Law, ER. Every network except CBS has at least one show about the supernatural and/or fantasy. The CW couldn't even wait until Smallville's corpse had cooled before it rolls out its re-imagining of the Green Arrow/Oliver Queen character.

— But wait... there's more! Networks are also holding a lot of shows back until midseason to see how their Fall line-up shakes out. NBC has THREE really high profile shows that will eventually make it onto the schedule. The reboot of The Munster fronted by Pushing Daisies' Bryan Fuller is still in development and will likely find a place on the schedule in 2013. The reboot of Hannibal, which got a straight to series order, will also make its debut in 2013. NBC also picked up another series, also straight to series, about Pirates. YES, YOU READ THAT RIGHT, PIRATES. I was all what are you doing NBC .. until I read the show was being written and produced by the man responsible for BBC's Luther. Yes, you read that right.. THE WRITER FOR LUTHER IS WRITING A PIRATE SERIES. So I will reserve judgment... the show, Crossbones, is looking to air in 2013.

— You may be asking yourself.. any GAY we should know about. Why yes... thanks for asking. In the trailer for NBC's Chicago Fire EMT Leslie Shay (played by Hawaii Five-0's Lauren German) says she is gay. We shall see if that is actually the case. If that is the case, they basically made "the hot girl" on the show gay which is ... awesome. Also, there is no word if ABC's Mistresses will keep the gay story for the British version of the show, but there IS a character named Alex on the show's official website which as you probably remember is the name of the gay character played by Anna Torv in the Brit series. The U.S. Alex will be played by Shannyn Sossamon.

As I said, nothing has really excited me this development season, but these are the trailers that made me go "okay, I might be watching this..."

Nashville (ABC)

Premise: Chart-topping Rayna James (Connie Britton) is a country legend who's had a career any singer would envy, though lately her popularity is starting to wane. Rayna's record label thinks a concert tour, opening for up-and-comer Juliette Barnes (Hayden Panettiere), the young and sexy future of country music, is just what Rayna needs. But scheming Juliette can't wait to steal Rayna's spotlight.
My Take: Connie Britton. I'd watch her read a phonebook in German.

Mistreses (ABC)

Premise: Welcome to a provocative and thrilling drama about the scandalous lives of a sexy and sassy group of four girlfriends, each on her own path to self-discovery, as they brave the turbulent journey together.
My Take: Waiting for the gay in this. Is there gay? I hope there is gay!

Revolution (NBC)

Premise: An apocalyptic event which wipes out all forms of technology forces a group of survivors to adapt to life without much of what we take for granted.
My Take: I am a total sucker for "end of days" type TV shows. I will watch anything with that kind of premise. I don't know if this will be worth it, but I will give it a shot.

Elementary (CBS)

Premise: Detective Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Joan Watson in a modern-day drama about a crime-solving duo that cracks the NYPD’s most impossible cases. Following his fall from grace in London and a stint in rehab, eccentric Sherlock escapes to Manhattan where his wealthy father forces him to live with his worst nightmare – a sober companion, Dr. Watson.
My Take: Watson as a lady! Will it be as good as the BBC version? Probably not. But the gender swap is an intriguing conceit that might make it just different enough. Also, the way in which BBC Sherlock fans and Steven Moffat are so pissed about this version kind of makes me like it even more. Seriously, though, I get why Moffat may be upset with this version, but the crap he is slinging against it makes me just want to yell at him through twitter... "dude, you realize these characters actually don't belong to you, right? Were you so morally offended by the version Disney did of Sherlock Holmes everyone were mice?"

Emily Owens, M.D. (The CW)

Premise: Emily Owens has just graduated from medical school and is now a first-year intern at Denver Memorial Hospital, where she’ll have the chance to work with world-famous cardiologist Dr. Gina Beckett – and where, not-so-coincidentally, her med-school crush Will Rider is also an intern. So why does everyone keep warning her that the hospital is just like high school?
My Take: I have such a girl crush on Mamie Gummer. She just always plays characters I want to instinctually root for... maybe because she has the adorable, dorky thing down and I just want to hug her and have a beer with her and be her friend. Well, anyway... I will watch anything she is in and the fact that she will be lusting over Justin Hartley who I also instinctually lust after is a bonus. Plus, this gives off a Scrubs/Grey's before it got melodramatic and started killing people vibe.

But stop the presses... hold the phone... the only new series you should care about is this one. Rachel Nichols as a time traveling cop. Let me say that again. RACHEL NICHOLS AS A TIME TRAVELING COP. Thank you, Canada. Bless you and your growing commitment to making shows that are amazingballs.

Yeah, totally not going to watch Gossip Girl next season. Fuck that shit. Who in their right mind would go back to Chuck after being crapped on by him over and over and over? Blair used to be my favorite character, but alas, she's now my least favorite character. I hope Dan completely eviscerates the entire UES in his next book. Fucking show, man.

Upfronts:
- I'm bummed that Bridget's show did not get picked up. I was so looking forward to seeing her back on TV.

- I thought Parks and Rec got a full 22-episode pickup? I am shocked about Whitney getting a full season pickup. WTF?

- Regarding Community being moved to Fridays, trust me, as a Fringe fan, I was so pissed off at Fox for moving it there, but in the end, it was for the best. Yes, the ratings dipped, but that's to be expected. I was just thrilled we even got a season four (and five) so I'll take what I can get.

- I am thrilled that Nikita got renewed. One of the best shows on TV right now, imo. People underestimate it, but it is a damn good show.

- Here's hoping Kristin Kreuk got acting lessons after leaving Smallville because I'm interested in watching this Beauty and the Beast remake. If she still sucks ass, I'm dumping the show.

- As for Mistresses, Shannyn Sossamon plays Alex?? I had no intention of watching this show after I saw the trailer, but since she's playing Alex, I'm hoping the show follows the British version, at least when it comes to the Alex/other Mistress plot.

And that's all I have.

Dude. I don't even know how to put my rage into actual words. Why even DO Blair/Dan if they weren't even going to be a significant plot point to her going back to Chuck? I knew there was a chance Dair would be sacrificed on the altar of Chuck/Blair endgame, but I thought it would involve more of a struggle on Blair's part, but ... nope.. she basically just leaves Dan with no real break up scene and decides the dude who has treated her like crap for the past five years deserves her love. Urgh.

- I thought Parks and Rec got a full 22-episode pickup? I am shocked about Whitney getting a full season pickup. WTF?

Yes, thanks... I corrected it. Parks & Rec was rumored to be coming back for only 13 episodes, but then NBC officially picked it up for 22. I was still going off the rumored numbers and not the actual numbers.

In a weird way the trailer does give me a bit of hope. Notice how the trailer gives us a preview of all the ladies storylines, but next to nothing about April (played by Rochelle Aytes) who I am assuming is taking over the Shelley Conn role. She tries on a dress and finds out her dead husband had an affair... that's the only preview we really get with regards to her when everyone else had previews with SEX. Soooo... maybe there is hope?

Feel free to rant about Smash. I am, as yet, unable to articulate myself about the finale. It's weird, for something I claim to hate, it sure has given me a lot of ~feelings this week. I shouldn't care about this stupid show and I hate that it's making me care.

MY POOR BABY IVY.

Also, I will possibly never get over the fact that I will not see Bridget Regan as a cowgirl on my screen on a weekly basis. I can't believe some faceless TV bastard took this away from me. I mean, seriously, all you need to know is that Bridget Regan will be there, on a horse, wearing a hat, possibly with dirty smudges on her face. Now, do you really need anything more for quality programming? I think not.

I have never felt more hurt by a show that I legitimately hate. I guess I was just really, really annoyed by how FAR they took the dismemberment of Ivy's character and I guess if I was Team Karen, it would have felt like ... YES, THE VILLAIN IS GETTING TAKEN DOWN, but it felt brutal to me and unnecessarily brutal. Yeah, I am going to need to sort through these feelings and maybe write Megan Hilty a love song .. or something.

I made my friends watch the Smash finale so I'd have someone to rant at this week! I'm glad it didn't air before I saw Megan Hilty last weekend or I would have ended up saying something directly to her! Bleh! And next season it'll be cursed with the Gossip Girl showrunner, so it'll probably be worse!
Jet: AMC Bianca/Marissajetgirl78 on May 18th, 2012 04:16 pm (UTC)
I think seeing Hilty over the weekend myself made Derek's "you don't have IT" even more laughable and ridiculous. Team Ivy forever!
absinthelisaabsinthelisa on May 18th, 2012 05:47 pm (UTC)
Exactly. What he said about Ivy is what I see in Katherine McPhee. She is pushing too hard, she doesn't have the natural feel of Marilyn. Megan killed in GPB (and did confirm that they are in talks to shift to Broadway, when she finally came out on Sunday night). She'd have blown Bombshell out of the water. I don't understand why they chose the wrong one!

One of my friends pointed out that everyone she see's who is a real theatre fan prefers Megan, but everyone else wants Katherine. They just don't understand what theatre takes.

True story: my sister told me she was glad Karen got the Marilyn role over Ivy and I actually threatened to punch her in the face. She's so lucky she lives hundreds of miles away from me. I don't know if I can ever take her seriously again. Ivy was Marilyn, plain and simple. Karen is a pop singer. Ivy is a freaking actress. I want to barf all over the show any time it tries to convince us otherwise.

Nashville and Emily Owens are the only new things I'm genuinely excited for so far, especially Nashville because I want to be able to watch Connie Britton in something I don't hate again. (American Horror story was a dark time for me.) I'm mildly ashamed to admit that I will also checkout Arrow and Beauty and the Beast.

The way the show was trying to MAKE KAREN HAPPEN was laughable by the end. I do like Katharine McPhee. I think she is wonderful pop singer and does have some talent, but she has a very, very flat affect and almost no emotional range as an actress. I think she would be TERRIFIC as a straight woman in a sitcom. It would suit her talent more, but in a drama that requires subtle emoting ... she looks like a lost puppy. It was hilarious to watch Megan Hilty blow her out of the water week after week.

All credit to Hilty... she took a role that was probably meant to be a one-note villain (she was probably supposed to be as annoying as Ellis) and she turned it into something more. She made a meal of it. Even when she was being a nasty, awful person, there was always an undercurrent of vulnerability and insecurity. I just wanted to give her a hug and tell her she was special... always. Katharine McPhee could never achieve those layers.

I'm mildly ashamed to admit that I will also checkout Arrow and Beauty and the Beast.

Is it shameful? Well, then I am ashamed too. Although, the lead dude from Arrow has not impressed me in the trailers and clips. Justin Hartley nailed the cocky and lovable side to the character. Although, I think the show is aiming more for angsty, loner and dark kind of thing.

Or by Young Sherlock , or Sherlock Holmes in New York with Roger Moore, or--let's be real--the Robert Downey, Jr. movies? It is ridiculous what twat waffles people are being over this. Moffat did not reinvent the fucking wheel! At first, because the Jeremy Brett series was such a seminal part of my childhood, I was extremely dubious about Sherlock. But, you know what? It's good and I like it quite a bit. And, no, like you say, Elementary probably won't be as good; but, I don't think it's trying to be a carbon copy of </i>Sherlock</i>, either. Johnny Lee Miller seems to be rolling with a different take on Holmes than Cumberbatch. So, I'm gonna give it a shot...mostly for Lucy Liu, but whatevs.

Alas, no Bridget Regan in the Old West for us this season (THAT PILOT BETTER LEAK OR I WILL HIT SOMEONE IN THE FACE).

I'm so bummed about this, especially since I've been really missing Legend of the Seeker of late. Ooh, here's an idea: Bridget should totally be cast in the NBC pirate series! Get on that, Powers That Be!

The way Sherlock fandom is going after this new version and being total racist DICKS to Lucy Liu, I hope this version is a ratings winner. Moffat is being a big fucking dick about it and it, frankly, makes me not want to watch the second season of Sherlock. I get why he is miffed but there is a way to be tactful about it without being "this isn't SHERLOCK!!! How dare they change canon." Sit down, guy.

I missed the last few episodes of Gossip Girl, so I don't know what happened there, but when I saw parts of the finale and saw Blair wanting the ruin Serena, and the whole Dan and Chuck thing, I was all "Wait, wait, what?" Seriously what happened to have cause the sudden 180? Did Blair lose her memory and thought she was back in season 1?

So I take it that Portia De Rossi comedy with Malin Ackerman didn't get picked up? I was sort of curious to check it out since Portia was great in Better off Ted and Silk Spectre as a mayor of a city has my attention.

Are you sure the Munsters series is being created by Bryan Fuller? Entertainment Weekly reported on more than one occasion that Bryan was making the Hannibal series. Though the Munsters reboot makes more sense since it's in Bryan's known territory. Plus the Hannibal series seems like a lost cause.

Revolution had my attention until I saw what network it was on. I could really see that series going as stale as Terra Nova and Flashforward did.

I'm sort of curious about Beauty and the Beast, but Arrow is still the only fall show I'm looking forward to mainly because I want to see Katie Cassidy as Black Canary.

But stop the presses... hold the phone... the only new series you should care about is this one.

Yup Continuum as well as Avatar the Legend of Korra are the only shows left that I'm excited about. Wow ironically fall is the disappointing time for TV series mainly because that's when the US networks are giving us the shows.

Thank you, Canada. Bless you and your growing commitment to making shows that are amazingballs.

Basically. I know I shouldn't count on Gossip Girl for masterful storytelling, but this was terrible even by their low standards (well, except Dan/Blair were brilliantly written for a while).

The amnesia remark is kind of a joke, but if that's seriously the best explanation, then oh Gossip Girl. Then again they brought Bart Bass back from the dead after like 3 or 4 years, so amnesia isn't too farfetched anymore. I agree with the Blair/Dan thing because Blair has actually been really likable, then the creators decide to reboot the series back to season 1 for no reason.

It truly is for the best CW is putting an end to this show. I'm sure even the actors are glad it's dead. The creators really do not even know what they're doing anymore. Here's some ideas the show might as well do now for the final season:

- Chuck shows how much he and Blair are meant for each other by being a Peter Griffin level douche to her and it's taken to parody levels.
- Blair loses more of her memories and thinks she's Nicky Alcott.
- Autumn Reeser is brought in since she made the OC watchable in it's final season and is brought in to do the same thing here. She even introduces herself as this very description.
- Bart Bass turns out to be a zombie who later starts infecting more people from the rich upper side. Most people can't really tell the difference.
- Dan and/or Nate lets the others know they're moving to another CW show and even show off some of the new things their learning for the new show. One of them learns magic since they're joining either Secret Circle/Supernatural or Vampire Diaries.
- Serena is MIA and the other characters explain "she left early. Lucky her". *they all say the last part with their heads down*
- Blair thinking she's Nicky Alcott starts dating Autumn Reeser while Chuck says to Blair lines like "No Blair. We're meant for each other or some crap like that according to the creators because I treat you like crap and keep on dumping you."
- Nate or Dan uses their magic to put an end to Bart and his army of zombies.
- In the last minute Kristen Bell steps out from behind the couch and says "I'm Gossip Girl. They couldn't think of a storyline for me, so I'm just here in the last minute to reveal myself." *the other characters just shrug*

There that won't be Gossip Girl, but at this point that's a good thing. And now that I think about this, I'm really tempted to actually write a fic on these ideas.
